Text description of the diagram
Overview
The diagram depicts the Class Environmental Assessment Process for Group “B” projects, listing the overall stages of the process and detailing the steps and outputs of the Preliminary Design stage.
Values
The six stages of the process are listed as:
- Public Consultation
- Ongoing Transportation Needs Assessment
- Need Identified
- Preliminary Design
- Detailed Design
- Construction
The timeline is titled “Preliminary Design Within the Environmental Assessment Process.”
The steps and outputs along the timeline are in order from left to right and titled:
- Data Collection
- Notifications and Project Website
- Generate and Evaluate
- Public Information Centres
- Select
- Finalize
- Report
- Transportation Environmental Study Report
- Clearance
Each of these steps and outputs include a description, detailed below.
Data Collection
Review available background information and conduct field studies as required to identify existing conditions in the study area.
Notifications and Project Website
January 2022
Generate and Evaluate
Develop Preliminary Design alternatives to develop the longterm plan for the interchange and consider potential impacts to the existing natural, socio-economic and cultural environment.
Public Information Centres
December 2022 and May 2024
Select
Identify the Preferred Alternative and identify mitigation measures to address potential impacts.
Finalize
Complete Preliminary Design of the Preferred Alternative including an implementation strategy.
Report
Document the Preliminary Design process leading to the Preferred Alternative (or Recommended Plan).
Transportation Environmental Study Report
September/October 2025
(Available for a 30-day Public Review Period)
Clearance
The Class EA requirements are met, and the project is cleared to proceed to Right-of-way Designation, Property Expropriation and Detail Design.
Presentation
The six stages are listed horizontally. The name of each stage is inside a chevron arrow shape pointing to the left.
A vertical arrow pointing upward and the words “We are here” are placed under “Preliminary Design.”
A circular arrow icon next to “Ongoing Transportation Needs Assessment” emphasizes that it is repeated throughout the process.
Below the six stages of the process is a timeline, titled “Preliminary Design Within the Environmental Assessment Process” that details the steps and outputs of the “Preliminary Design” stage. This timeline is inside a box with a triangle that points to “Preliminary Design” in the list of stages.
These steps and outputs are depicted at various intervals along a left-pointing arrow.
“Data Collection,” “Generate and Evaluate,” “Select,” “Finalize,” and “Report” are all depicted at equal intervals along the arrow. The space between “Report” and “Clearance” is slightly shorter than the space between the other steps. These steps all branch upwards from the arrow.
“Notifications and Project Website” is depicted shortly after “Data Collection,” implying that this is the output of the “Data Collection” step. “Public Information Centres” is depicted shortly before “Select,” implying that the activities in the Select stage are closely tied to the “Public Information Centres.” “Transportation Environmental Study Report” is depicted shortly after “Report,” implying that this is the output of the “Report” step. These outputs branch downwards from the arrow, visually setting them apart from the steps.
